Stratford-on-Avon District Council
Stratford Riverside
The challenge
Creating a new local nature reserve
Stratford-on-Avon District Council wanted to develop a neglected 72-acre area along the riverside into a sustainable local nature reserve, transforming a former council waste site and improving a further 60 acres of public amenity space. They hoped to fund the project through the Get Building Fund – part of central government’s post-pandemic strategic reset.
Right from the outset, the overall aim was to improve biodiversity, provide better public access to nature and develop subtle, high quality public facilities. With our support, the project overcame a whole range of challenges to achieve so much more.
The role we played
Our Pulse Consult team worked closely with the council to secure funding for the project, then provided project management consultancy, quantity surveying and employer’s agent services throughout the project’s life cycle. This included the seamless single appointment and coordination of over 20 specialists, spanning a whole range of disciplines.
We formed a project board with our client, stakeholders and project partners, then worked together to focus on a number of key value-driven outcomes. These included creating self-generating funding for 30+ years of maintenance, achieving protected status for the new nature reserve, supporting community involvement, overcoming local concerns, encouraging wellness and sport, ensuring accessibility and reducing traffic in the town.
Consulting with a wide range of people, we are committed to preserving the critical biodiversity that is supported by this area. This project is a real opportunity to regenerate the riverside for all users, while placing its ecological value at the heart of the development in a thoughtful and inspirational way.

The results
Together, we’ve delivered a beautiful, sustainable new public space, complete with paths, river bridges and community facilities. With extensive environmental works, the project’s significantly improved biodiversity. We’re also proud to have helped the site achieve local nature reserve status – something that initially seemed too great a stretch for the budget.
The project has had a hugely positive impact, creating 4 new jobs, securing a further 96 jobs, creating almost 4km of new footpaths, reducing 27,560m2 of flood risk area, helping 48 businesses, cutting almost 700kg of carbon and improving over 268m2 of public realm.
With a real commitment to the client, project and community, our construction consultants overcame objections, post-covid cost increases, significant scope change, site contamination and a continuously evolving political, commercial, statutory and environmental backdrop. The result is an award-winning project and a genuinely special new space for Stratford – the client has thanked Pulse Consult for working tirelessly to see it through.
