Spender Academy Trust
Rushcliffe Spencer Academy Project R2310
The challenge
Leading a complex school expansion
Rushcliffe Spencer Academy is a high-performing secondary school that’s been consistently oversubscribed for several years, and catchment area growth means that’s set to continue. To offer a place to all in-catchment children, the school carried out a masterplan expansion study, aiming to increase capacity from 1,770 to 2,310 by 2031/2.
Project 2310 is the continuation of that work – a complex education construction project addressing the immediate challenges in pupil growth. It includes phased demolition of the now-relocated local leisure centre (which once shared the school site) as well as redevelopment, remodelling and the creation of new school buildings.
It’s a challenging project because of the interdependencies between workstreams, and the need to minimise disruption on a live school site. A key element is the safe separation of school and public access, both during and beyond the build, as the site is also home to community all-weather sports pitches and the Notts Gymnastics Academy.

The role we’re playing
As project management consultants for the scheme, we’ve worked closely with stakeholders to facilitate a logical, phased approach, prioritising health, safety and safeguarding. Work’s been meticulously planned to minimise noise and distraction, especially in exam periods.
We’ve given the client unwavering support throughout multiple phases, collaborating with the appointed contractor, Morgan Sindall. This included working together on value engineering to bring the project within the affordability parameters of the Trust and local authority, and facilitate grant funding. We also come together as a project team for weekly planning, problem-solving and decision-making meetings.

The results
This extensive education construction project is on track for completion by November 2024 and feedback so far is very positive. Once complete, it will provide an inspiring campus and much-needed infrastructure for a growing community.
The project will deliver 5,150m2 of new school buildings, including catering and dining, a sports hall / assembly space, fitness facilities, and new classrooms for several departments. Existing teaching blocks and large spaces will also be remodelled to meet increased intake.
External works include new all-weather pitches, landscaping, reconfigured parking, and a social space at the heart of the site. Notts Gymnastics Academy will gain a mezzanine reception, and new infrastructure (including a new substation) will support the entire site.
