University of Lincoln
Isaac Newton Building Phases 1 and 2
The challenge
Creating a new campus landmark
The University of Lincoln wanted to create a new home for its Schools of Engineering, Computer Sciences and Maths & Physics, as well as strengthen its strategic partnership with Siemens by creating more dedicated space for them on campus.
Their vision was for a new, landmark building, providing a mixture of laboratories, workshops, a 500-seat lecture theatre, teaching areas, seminar rooms, offices and catering facilities – as well as expanded accommodation for Siemens.
It was a major education construction project, due to be carried out in two phases, under NEC Option A contracts. That meant managing two contractors on site, without disrupting the safety or day-to-day activities of University staff, students or the Siemens team.
The role we played
Our construction consultants have a huge range of education construction experience, so the University commissioned Pulse Consult to provide NEC project management throughout construction of the new school building.
We brought in carefully chosen contract management software to help ensure both the client and the contractors successfully carried out all of their NEC contract requirements. Our team also organised practical training for colleagues from each organisation.
Meeting the schedule meant phase 2 construction would need to be carried out while the University and Siemens were using the completed phase 1 areas. To make sure this went smoothly, we established strong, collaborative relationships between the contractors, client, consultants and stakeholders, bringing everyone together to achieve the project’s goals.

The results
With our support, the new 12,992m2 Isaac Newton Building opened on time, on budget, creating a campus landmark that the University and its partners are genuinely proud of.
It’s a high quality, collaborative environment that supports the University’s academic needs and aspirations, and has strengthened its relationship with Siemens and their international partners. The building won Graphisoft BIM Project of the Year and has become a gateway to the south campus, creating closer links with the city.

Pulse have been working with our Estates team on a variety of projects ranging from small scale refurbishments to large laboratory projects. Pulse have been a valuable extension of our Estates Team, they showed a detailed knowledge of estate management when they wrote our Project Management procedures, a strong management approach to achieving results whilst balancing the need for stakeholder engagement and detail in cost planning schemes.
