The challenge

Building a new A&E for Boston

In the emergency department at Pilgrim Hospital in Boston, there’s a pressing need for greater capacity – making sure patients get the treatment they need quickly, increasing patient flow, and improving the environment for both patients and staff.

The Capital Projects Estates and Facilities team at United Lincolnshire Hospital Trust has commissioned a major new healthcare construction project, developing a new emergency department for at the hospital – and at Pulse Consult, we’re proud to be taking the lead.

The role we’re playing

With extensive experience in hospital and healthcare construction, our expert team is steering the project through three distinct phases.

Phase 1 (now complete) involved demolishing an old two-storey building, while phase 2 (currently on site) involves construction of a new two-storey structure featuring a concrete frame with a range of infills. The superstructure is now erected and internal fit out is fully underway. Phase 3 will see the project team complete the soft demolition of other existing assets, leaving only their steel portal frames. These will be redeveloped to achieve BREEAM Excellent standards and be fully compatible with the NHS Green Plan.

The results

This demanding but hugely positive long-term project is still underway, with our Pulse Consult construction consultants working on internal secondment to provide the client with consistent, end-to-end project management.

Because we’re working within a fully operational, congested hospital, this includes careful site and stakeholder management. On one side of the construction site, we’re working just a metre away from live hospital facilities, while on two other sides, we’re sharing party walls. On the fourth side, a blue light route needs to be kept clear at all times.

Despite these challenges, we’re using our hospital construction experience to keep the programme progressing at pace, while minimising disruption to patients, staff and visitors.
