Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
Newark Elective Hub

The challenge
Building a better patient experience
Newark Hospital is a vital part of Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust – delivering planned and elective procedures separately from the Trust’s emergency pathway at nearby King’s Mill. But with a shortage of available theatre facilities, the hospital had a backlog of procedures, leaving patients waiting too long for treatment.
The Trust asked our healthcare construction experts to help develop a new modular theatre unit, with a link corridor to the hospital, as well as refurbishing treatment rooms and ancillary spaces in an existing wing.
This would enable more surgeries, reduce waiting times and improve the patient and staff experience. A technically challenging hospital construction project with multiple stakeholders and contractors, it needed to be delivered safely, without disrupting activities on a live site.

The role we played
The project demanded three separate contractors – a main contractor, a modular contractor and the Trust’s PFI partner. We worked closely to bring together all three teams, as well as the design team, clinical leads and hospital estates department.
Through extensive planning and communication, we fostered real collaboration between everyone involved. This meant logistics and construction were efficiently coordinated, so the hospital construction project could move at pace, without impacting patients and staff.

The results
We’re proud to have driven the delivery of a new, state-of-the-art healthcare building and surgical facility – the Newark Elective Hub. It includes a new laminar flow operating theatre, anaesthetics room, patient recovery room, scrub area, sterile store, dirty utility, staff change area and server room.
Our team made sure room sizes, layouts and adjacencies complied with Health Building Notes (HBNs) and Health Technical Memorandums (HTMs) for healthcare construction projects. The new facilities are joined to to the main hospital by a single-storey link lobby, designed for optimum staff and patient flow.
With extended, enhanced treatment facilities, the Newark Elective Hub is making 50 extra procedures possible, every week. It’s a significant increase in the hospital’s orthopaedic and trauma capacity that’s set to improve patient care and experience, as well as reduce waiting times for people across mid-Nottinghamshire and parts of Lincolnshire.
