Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Trust
Mansfield CDC
The challenge
Creating a state-of-the-art NHS diagnostic centre
Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Trust has created a state-of-the-art community diagnostic centre (CDC) in the heart of Mansfield. The goal was to provide a range of health checks, including blood tests, ultrasound, CT and MRI scans, in one accessible setting.
This will reduce pressure on hospitals, speed up diagnosis of health conditions and improve health inequalities – reducing preventable deaths and the long-term impacts of disease, and ultimately leading to better outcomes for more patients.
The role we played
With our track record in healthcare and hospital construction, the Trust brought us in to lead the scheme, providing project management consultancy, quantity surveying and CDM advisor services.
Close collaboration with the Trust, stakeholder groups, safety groups and approval boards is always critical on NHS projects, giving everyone input and oversight. For the CDC, we set up specific governance groups to make crucial decisions in real time, maintaining momentum.
Throughout the pre-construction design phase, we worked with the main contractor and stakeholders to drive cost efficiency, meet the Client’s needs and adhere to the business case. This included deciding to repurpose an existing building, and bring in a healthcare planner to rationalise the overall footprint.
Our strategy was a phased delivery programme, from design and demolition to refurbishment and new build. It focused on sustainability by reusing the existing Trust estate, making better use of the footprint for the community, while hugely reducing carbon emissions and waste.
The result
The CDC features echo, cardio and respiratory consulting rooms, a gynaecology treatment room, phlebotomy room, clinic rooms and endoscopy and imaging departments. These are supported by a reception, waiting area, staff and admin spaces. External finishes reference the existing hospital, creating a distinct but consistent look.
In total, the new facilities provide an estimated 140,000 diagnostic tests per year, across ten different techniques. It’s the largest expansion in diagnostics the Trust has ever seen, and also provides brand new clinical pathways for patients with breathlessness, suspected liver fibrosis and children with epilepsy.
We’re proud to be part of such a critical, collaborative healthcare construction project, directly tackling real health inequalities. The Trust was hugely positive about the work, including the support of the Pulse Consult team. The community were also kept informed and engaged at every stage of the process.
"The Mansfield Community Diagnostic Centre is a fantastic example of what can be achieved through strong leadership, collaborative working and a shared commitment to delivering the best possible outcome for patients and the local community. Pulse Consult provided exceptional project leadership throughout, ensuring effective governance, proactive risk management and seamless stakeholder coordination from inception to completion. This was complimented by a contractor (Kier) and Design team who embodied a collaborative and solutions-focused approach, which helped the project team successfully navigate the challenges of delivering a highly technical healthcare facility within a live hospital environment. There was a genuine one-team culture that enabled informed decision-making, maintained operational continuity and ensured the project was delivered safely, efficiently and to an exceptionally high standard. The result is a modern, patient-focused facility that will provide lasting benefits for healthcare services across Nottinghamshire."
