Renault Trucks
Renault Trucks training centre
The challenge
Transforming futures with Renault Trucks
The team at Renault Trucks (part of the Volvo Group) had ambitious plans to turn a dilapidated clothing production warehouse at Whetstone in Leicestershire into a dedicated training centre – one of the first of its kind within the Group.
They wanted to transform the building with bespoke workshop and classroom designs, enabling them to train existing employees and create new opportunities for local trainees. However, to meet their targets, the whole project needed to be completed on a tight budget, in just 15 weeks.

The role we played
At Pulse Consult, we’ve earned a strong reputation for delivering both commercial and education construction projects, and we’ve built a really positive partnership with the Renault Trucks team. As a result, they brought our commercial construction consultants on board to provide project management, employers’ agent and quantity surveyor services.
From the start, we managed internal stakeholders to make sure the project had the right team behind it, and they were thoroughly consulted at every stage. We created a positive, proactive working environment, with close collaboration between the client and contractor, so issues could be quickly and pragmatically tackled as they arose.
The building’s condition created numerous challenges and despite extensive surveys, additional issues emerged as the project progressed. On top of this, late in the design phase, the landlord introduced revised carbon reduction goals, which meant gas needed to be removed from the site and replaced with an electric-based system.
We efficiently managed this significant scope change, so it had no impact on the timeline. Due to funding constraints, it also became necessary to conduct a value engineering exercise, which we did at speed, working with the client and contractor to avoid delays.

The results
Despite numerous challenges relating to the age and condition of the existing building, our strict cost controls meant we were able to deliver the project on the client’s limited budget. With extensive coordination, collaboration, planning and problem-solving, the whole team pulled together to meet the project’s deadline and get the centre’s doors open on time.
As a result, we’ve had hugely positive feedback from Renault Trucks. Their team feel certain that this brand new, dedicated facility will attract more trainee technicians, which is critical for the future growth of their business.
